I Believe I Can

More than ever before, I see the truth in sayings like:

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you are right.”

“Believe you can and you are halfway there.”

“The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do.”

I started defining my life purpose two years ago, and yesterday, I ran my first workshop to help others discover their life purpose. The common theme that emerged from the workshop is that we do have causes we care about in life, passions we love to pursue in life, but the big “BUT” keeps us from believing that we can.

But I don’t have the skills. But I may fail. But I don’t have the confidence. But . . .

Let’s put aside our BUT’s for a moment, and think – what would I do if I were unreasonable?

Only when we are asked to be unreasonable about our dreams and remove the BUT from our vocabulary, do we give ourselves permission to see our true potential. The voice of BUT is so loud that until we shut it up, we can’t hear our true yearning – we can’t hear the calling to pursue our life purpose.

For a moment, we allow ourselves to hear our calling. Many of us wrote down life purposes that are worth our lives. However, just as quickly as we see the light, the voice of fear jumps back in at full force.

Are you crazy? Are you really going to quit your job? Are you really committed to going through all the pain of getting a second degree?

We so quickly rewind back to the place where we don’t believe we can. Fear keeps us there, where it’s safe.

“Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the ability to act in the presence of fear.”

Push aside the fears and the BUTs, commit to our life purposes. Make a plan. Create milestones that doesn’t sound too scary. Step by step, take action towards each milestone. When we celebrate each milestone:

We will feel more confident and stronger in our belief that we can.

We will get better at managing fear and acting courageously.

We will be amazed by the progress we make, and no longer imagine living any other way.
